Ahmad Yari sets out the vision of the Yari Sport Initiative

Ahmad Abdulaziz Yari has outlined a vision for Yari Sport Initiative built around young people, opportunity and the discovery of sporting talent. As Patron, he has set out the initiative's ambition to bring young people together, connect athletes with coaching and training, and create organised opportunities to take part in sport.

YSI's aims include building sports centres and finding talented athletes who may otherwise remain unnoticed. Football and horse racing are among its early programme areas, giving the initiative more than one setting in which to bring participants together.

Sport as an opportunity to participate

The starting point of YSI's vision is inclusion. Ahmad has described an initiative intended to carry young people along and give talent a way to be seen. Participation is therefore part of the purpose from the outset, alongside the competitive events themselves.

This emphasis connects the initiative's different aims. Discovering an athlete is one step; helping that athlete gain access to coaching and training is another. YSI places both within its approach to sports development, recognising the relationship between an opportunity to participate and an opportunity to improve.

The initiative's focus on young people gives those aims a shared direction. The ambition is to create a route through which emerging athletes can come into contact with sporting opportunities and the people who can help develop their abilities.

Discovering talent and connecting athletes

Talent discovery is a central part of the vision Ahmad has outlined. YSI seeks to find athletes whose abilities may not yet have attracted attention and connect them with coaches and training.

The two priorities belong together. A platform that brings participants into view also needs an interest in what follows: the coaching and training through which ability can develop. YSI's stated aims address that progression rather than concentrating only on the moment of competition.

For young participants, the initiative is intended to offer a setting in which sport can bring them together and make their abilities more visible. Its purpose combines participation, discovery and development within the same programme of work.

The ambition for sports centres

Building sports centres is another part of YSI's vision. The aim is to provide places where athletes can train properly, supporting the wider interest in coaching and the development of talent.

This is an ambition for the initiative's development. It belongs alongside the plans for events and athlete support, giving the vision a focus on training spaces as well as occasions for competition.

The distinction matters to the work itself: an event brings people together for a particular occasion, while a place to train serves a different purpose. YSI's aims include both forms of opportunity for young athletes.

Football and horse racing

The launch phase identifies a YSI football tournament and horse racing as early event pillars. These activities give practical form to the initiative's interest in organised participation and bring different sporting communities into its programme.

Football offers one route for bringing young players together. Horse racing provides another part of the programme, with the Kano competition scheduled for 26 and 27 September featuring in discussions between the YSI team and Ahmad earlier in the month.

On 6 September, members of the Yari Sport Initiative team visited Ahmad at his Abuja office. The meeting concerned the upcoming launch and the Kano horse-racing competition, connecting the wider vision with preparations for specific engagements.

Patron and Grand Patron

Ahmad serves as Patron of Yari Sport Initiative. Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari serves as Grand Patron. These are the roles through which their connection to the initiative is presented.

The Senator is Ahmad's father, a former Governor of Zamfara State and the Senator representing Zamfara West. Their respective patronage roles provide the family connection within YSI while the initiative retains its own sporting purpose and team.

YSI is separate from Ahmad Abdulaziz Yari Foundation, whose remit centres on charitable empowerment and community support. Ahmad's responsibilities with the City Boy Movement and Yari Messengers are also distinct from his role as YSI Patron.

Membership and organised events

YSI's membership model includes registration and QR verification at events. The intention is to give participation an organised structure, with membership connected to access to the initiative's activities.

Membership and event arrangements are part of how the programme brings participants together. They accompany the sporting aims of discovery, coaching and training, rather than replacing those aims with registration alone.

From the Abuja meeting to Kano

The 6 September meeting gave the YSI team time with its Patron ahead of the launch. Their discussion covered the forthcoming programme and the horse-racing competition in Kano, placing a specific sporting event within the initiative's early activities.

Ahmad subsequently arrived in Kano for Yari Sport Initiative. The engagement continued his involvement as Patron and connected the preparations discussed in Abuja with the initiative's activities in Kano.

A continuing focus on young athletes

YSI's wider vision remains centred on young people and the opportunities sport can create. Bringing participants together, identifying ability, connecting athletes with training and developing sports centres are the aims Ahmad has outlined as Patron.

The initiative's early events give that vision a public setting. Its longer-term ambition is the development of talent and participation: helping young athletes move from an ability that may be overlooked towards opportunities to train, compete and be seen.
