Ahmad Yari pays a courtesy visit to General Ibrahim Babangida in Minna

A courtesy visit by Ahmad Abdulaziz Yari to General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, GCFR, in Minna became a personal conversation about family, education and the influence of a grandfather whose encouragement continued to shape later generations.

Ahmad met the former Nigerian Head of State at his residence in Minna, Niger State. During their conversation, General Babangida recognised a connection to Ahmad's maternal grandfather, Ibrahim, and spoke warmly about him.

A family connection in Minna

General Babangida asked Ahmad, "You're Ibrahim's grandson?" Ahmad replied, "Yes, Sir." The former Head of State smiled and responded, "Wow, what a small world."

The exchange gave the visit a particular family significance. General Babangida went on to share affectionate recollections of Ahmad's maternal grandfather and patted Ahmad on the back. A meeting to pay respects to an elder statesman had also become an occasion to remember someone important to Ahmad's family.

The Ibrahim in that conversation was Ahmad's mother's father. General Babangida's recognition linked the encounter in Minna to a family relationship extending beyond the immediate occasion.

Encouragement that endured

Reflecting on the visit, Ahmad recalled the role his maternal grandfather played in encouraging his father to remain in school. At a time when others were pressing his father to leave, his grandfather encouraged him to continue his education.

For Ahmad, that intervention remained meaningful long after his grandfather's death. He reflected on the ways a family can continue to benefit from the guidance and encouragement of an earlier generation, and offered a prayer for his grandfather's peaceful rest.

That recollection gave the visit its strongest theme: the lasting value of encouragement. The conversation was personal, rooted in the memory of someone who had helped shape an important decision within the family. Ahmad's reflection connected that decision to the life his father went on to lead.

Respect across generations

Ahmad is the son of Senator Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari, a former Governor of Zamfara State and the Senator representing Zamfara West. The visit brought that family background into a different setting, through General Babangida's memories of Ahmad's maternal grandfather.

The courtesy call offered time with a former Head of State, but the exchange Ahmad took away was also about the people whose influence is felt within families. General Babangida's recollections made the visit an occasion of recognition as well as respect.

Family and public life

Family has featured in other shared occasions, including the conferment of the Obaloyin and Yeye Obaloyin of Yorubaland titles on Ahmad's parents at the Alaafin of Oyo's palace. Ahmad joined the family in Oyo and reflected on the significance of unity across regional differences.
